BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Philippe Goujon is a Doctor of Philosophy. After obtaining a degree in philosophy, his interest in science encouraged him to undertake epistemological studies. His thesis, under the supervision of Professor Jean Gayon, analyzed the scientific and philosophical work of Professor Jacques Monod. It was presented in 1993 at the University of Burgundy (Dijon) and was entitled "Along thePaths of Information and Communication to Complexity". It provided a historical-critical analysis of information and communication concepts, their various rationalizations and evolution, as well as their scientific, socio-economic and ideological implications.
Philippe Goujon authored several articles on artificial life, self-organization, thermodynamics, the complexity, biotechnology, genomics and also the connection between science, techniques, education and culture. He authored books about the autoorganisation concept(1) and about the ethics of technology(2). After his first appointment as qualified researcher at the University of Burgundy, then at the Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maitres (IUFM) in Bourg-en-Bresse, he spent three years in post-doctorate studies at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) under the mentorship of Bernard Feltz from the Institut Supérieur de Philosophie. He has been teaching epistemology and philosophy at the Catholic University of Lille from 1995 to 2003. In 2004 he is appointed has a “chargé de cours” at the FUNDP (Namur Belgium
).
One aspect of his research concerned the history and the socio-economic impacts of the European yeast genome sequence project(3) carried out in the context of the biotechnology programs known as BAP - BRIDGE - BIOTECH 1 and 2. He wrote a book about the history of biotechnology, genomic and the European genome sequence projects. He has addressed the epistemological and ethical problems of this new scientific field which is named genomic and of GMO. His research now concerns the epistemology of complexity as well as the interaction between science, technology and culture, the cultural impact of informatics, the philosophy of informatics and the epistemology of computing.
He has taken part in a European biotechnology research program entitled "The Industrial Use of Genome Resources in Europe"(4).
In 1989, he was honored by the Bleustein-Blanchet foundation and in 1991, he received the medal of honor from the University of Burgundy (Dijon)
In 1997, in addition to teaching at the Higher Institute of Agriculture, the Free Faculty of Science, the Higher School of Enterprise Management (ESPEME), he was a member of the Contemporary Ethical Center where he was responsible for coordinating a project concerning ethics in engineering, sponsored by the European SOCRATES program. He has organised various seminars and symposia, an international symposium on ethics and sociotechnic complexity and has written a book on the GMO controversy (ed world scientific 2001)
In 1998, he was qualified as "Maître de Conférences" and Professor in Epistemology and History of Science and in 2004 he obtained the Habilitation à diriger des recherches (director of investifgation).
