SIG9.2.1 Aims and goals
The special interest group on information technology and
disability aims to
- assess, analyze and promote the opportunities available
to persons with disabilities resulting from information
and communications technologies particularly in terms of
accessibility and usability
- emphasize the desirability of design for all, and
facilitate this notion in a seamless way
- highlight the market opportunities offered to persons
with a disability by information and communication
technologies
- aim to enhance the lives of all disabled people
throughout the globe through the use of information and
communication technologies, particularly in Third World
countries, while taking account of cultural diversity
- assess and analyze the possible social threats of
information and communications technologies for persons
with disabilities and make the community aware of these
- undertake surveys on relevant topics of interest e.g.,
the means of funding computer technology at home, at
work, and in education for persons with disabilities
- create an international forum of leading researchers and
practioners to discuss and explore these issues
- organize working conferences and publish articles or
books on these topics
Scope
The special interest group on information technology and
disability covers many different areas of information and
communication technology. It sees the need in a global
information society to study all the emerging technologies
including multi-media, voice recognition, artificial
intelligence, virtual reality, and broadband telecommunications.
The group's emphasis is to facilitate access to all products for
all people, optimizing the use of information and communication
technologies in as many potential markets as possible.
