The emergence of Software Engineering as a new Engineering discipline
Abstract: Traditional engineering disciplines took centuries to evolve and become recognized as engineering disciplines. And these engineering disciplines have developed knowledge and practices that provide to the public the confidence that they can safely use engineering devices and related products. Now, with the rapid evolution of technology and of technology-related knowledge, there is a plethora of claims of new knowledge areas as engineering disciplines. But, are these claims a sufficiently sound basis upon which to build and rely on a new engineering discipline? Should you entrust your own life and society's safety to the artifacts built only by highly specialized researchers? This presentation is devoted to the foundations upon which engineering disciplines are built, structured and integrated within the framework of a modern society. The presentation also includes an overview of the SWEBOK project which contributed to the development of the consensus on software engineering as a bona fide engineering discipline.
